Polyamide 6.6 is made from two building-block chemicals, hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid. Each contains six carbon atoms, which is where the name “6.6” comes from. Its tightly packed molecular structure gives it high strength, stiffness and heat stability compared with lower-grade nylons and general plastics.

UL 94 is a plastics flammability standard from Underwriters Laboratories. A V2 rating means the material stops burning within 30 seconds once the flame is removed. V2 does allow burning drips, which is the difference between V2 and the stricter V1 and V0 ratings. If a specification calls for V0 or V1, check the requirement before using V2-rated ties.

Polyamide 6.6 has a melting point of about 265°C and stays stable across a broad temperature range. That makes it suitable for electrical enclosures, machinery and engine bays. For continuous high-heat applications, check the operating temperature on the product datasheet.

Polyamide 6.6 resists many oils, greases and solvents found on industrial sites. If you are working with specific aggressive chemicals, check compatibility on the product datasheet first.

Both our black and natural nylon cable ties are made from the same high-quality Polyamide 6.6. The primary difference is the addition of carbon black to the black ties, which provides increased UV resistance. For this reason, black cable ties are the recommended choice for outdoor applications or where exposure to sunlight is a factor.

A cable tie has a toothed strap and a moulded head. Inside the head is a small locking tooth called a pawl. When you pull the strap through the head, the pawl engages the teeth on the strap and stops it sliding back out. A well-made tie has a strong pawl and a precisely moulded head, so it stays locked under load.

There are two measurements to consider:

• Length sets the largest bundle the tie can go around. As a rule of thumb, choose a tie at least one-third longer than the bundle’s circumference, so it is easy to thread and tighten.
• Width is the main driver of tensile strength. Wider ties carry heavier loads.

If you are unsure, choose the stronger option. In high-vibration or critical areas it is better to over-specify than to risk a failure.

Small ties, around 98mm to 140mm long and 2.5mm to 3.5mm wide, suit fine wiring in control panels, PCBs and data racks. Their slim profile secures conductors without crushing insulation, and they take up little room in crowded enclosures.

• Heavy-duty ties (roughly 360mm to 720mm long, 7.5mm to 12.5mm wide) suit temporary fencing, scaffolding, large conduit bundles and hydraulic lines.
• Extra-long ties (850mm to 1000mm long, 12.5mm wide) wrap around large pipes, HVAC ducting and very large cable bundles.

We don’t recommend it. Daisy-chaining ties creates several weak points where the bundle can fail. Use an extra-long cable tie instead.
